The Greek Chicken Pita at Zoës Kitchen in Bearden.

When you’re on the road you are usually faced with the same food choices, and most of them involve a bun or a nugget. Over the summer we were on our way to Florida and before we reached Birmingham, Alabama we messaged a friend to get some suggestions of yummy places to eat. She suggested Zoës Kitchen, which we had spotted a sign for on Bearden Hill just days earlier. Eventually we located it, since it was our first time in Birmingham it took us a little while, then we piled out of the car and headed in.

Just about all of the menu items were Mediterranean/Greek inspired and not a chicken nugget or cheeseburger to be seen. Sold! I chose the Hummus & Salad Plate ($6.99), not your usual road trip fare, and the kids chose the Kids Roll Up for $3.49 (includes chips or a small fruit cup) and it’s basically chicken and mozzarella wrapped up in a tortilla with a side of marinara. They gobbled it down. Hubby had the grown up version, which had feta instead of mozzarella, plus lettuce tomato and caramelized onion, and cost $7.59. There wasn’t a fried item on the menu and the ingredients are all fresh too.

While Zoës Kitchen made a refreshing change I wasn’t completely hooked until I ordered the Greek Chicken Pita at the brand new Knoxville location when it opened just a week or two later. It was delish. I am pretty picky about my Pita sandwiches since I’ve been to Greece a few times and grew up in Australian city with a huge Greek population. The pita bread was warm (I hate it when it’s floury and cold), the chicken was tasty and good quality and there was lots of feta and caramelized onion. It was great value for $7.39.

The central Knoxville location is super handy for us when we’re out and about. And it is a great place to stop for dinner before or after the gym, bike riding or just when you want something to eat that won’t make you feel guilty or feel like you’re eating the same old, same old again.  And best of all, it’s kid-friendly without making you feel as it you’re giving in to their boring taste buds! Oh, and it’s a great option if you want to pick up food for a pot luck or dinner for four, the Greek Chicken Marinara includes four grilled chicken breasts, orzo pasta, greek salad and pita bread for $26.99.

Zoës Kitchen is located at 6638 Kingston Pike, on Bearden Hill in Knoxville TN.  37919, Phone: (865) 450-2412 Open: 11-9 Daily
